MasterClass SZN 3 EP 2- Let the building begin!

In this MasterClass episode, RC expert Joshua Orchard walks viewers through the essential steps every builder should take when preparing and upgrading an ARF (Almost Ready-to-Fly) model airplane. Using the Ryan PT-22 as his demonstration platform, Joshua highlights practical techniques, trusted tools, and upgrade strategies that help transform an out-of-the-box ARF into a high-performance, scale-accurate aircraft.

For DU-BRO RC enthusiasts, this episode delivers a wealth of useful building knowledge—especially when it comes to hardware preparation, covering work, and precision detailing.

Start With a Thorough Inspection and Covering Tune-Up

Right after unboxing, Joshua stresses the importance of a full inspection to ensure every part is present and free from damage. ARFs frequently experience loose or wrinkled covering due to temperature shifts during shipping, so tightening the covering is one of the first tasks.

Using a covering iron—such as Hangar 9 or 21st Century models—set to the proper temperature, builders can shrink the covering and restore a smooth surface. An infrared thermometer takes out the guesswork, ensuring accurate heat levels. A heat gun also plays a key role in evenly tightening large areas, removing minor dents, bubbles, and imperfections. Joshua cautions viewers to avoid overheating masked areas, as adhesive can pull the covering away from the wood.

Chasing T-Nuts: Why DU-BRO’s Drill & Tap Set Matters

One of the most valuable tips in this episode is Joshua’s demonstration of “chasing” T-nuts (blind nuts)—a critical step for ensuring strong, accurate mounting points.

Factory-installed blind nuts often have inconsistent or rough threading. Joshua uses a DU-BRO drill and tap set, along with a drop of 3-in-1 oil, to clean and refine the threads. This allows screws and bolts to seat correctly without cross-threading. For better control and feel, he recommends attaching the tap to a pin vise, making the process cleaner and more precise.

For anyone upgrading landing gear, wings, or structural components, this DU-BRO tool provides a noticeable reliability boost.

Removing Covering: A Slow, Controlled Method

When builders want to customize an ARF beyond factory colors, Joshua shows how to remove the existing film by gently heating with a heat gun and pulling slowly with the help of a straight edge. Controlled heat helps release the adhesive without damaging the wood underneath—ideal for large-scale upgrades.

Next-Level Upgrades: Fiberglass, Vinyl, and Scale Details

Looking ahead, Joshua plans a major upgrade for the PT-22 by stripping the fuselage and applying 3/4 oz fiberglass cloth laminated with Deluxe Materials Easy Coat, a water-based alternative to epoxy. This approach produces a lightweight, smooth finish ideal for adding chrome vinyl, such as HTV brand materials, to recreate the polished aluminum appearance of the full-scale aircraft.

He also intends to add scale panel lines, requiring careful sanding and surface prep to achieve a professional, metal-like finish.

This MasterClass episode serves as a valuable guide for ARF builders who want to enhance durability, appearance, and performance. With the help of smart techniques and dependable hardware—especially DU-BRO’s precision tools—any ARF can be transformed into a standout aircraft ready for the field or the show line.
